History & Hallmark
  Tannoy is one of the world's most vigorous audio engineering companies,
tracing its roots to the mid 1920s. An entrepreneurial beginning making
radio battery chargers from Tantalum and a Lead alloy, ultimately provided
the inspiration for the Tannoy name. Experiments with moving coil
loudspeakers began shortly after the first factory was established and the
company has continued to research, design and excel in that field. In the
immediate post-war decades, Tannoy consistently grew as a leading supplier
of monitor loudspeakers to recording professionals and the new burgeoning
domestic Hi-Fi and communications markets. During the last 10 years in
particular, great strides have been made by Tannoy in the analytical
understanding of loudspeakers. In parallel, the explosion of computing
power available to our physicists, acoustic, electronic and industrial
engineers has placed Tannoy in an enviable position, one that we have
exploited to the full in producing the Definition D700. High power handling,
reliable products with outstanding accuracy and wide dynamics are the
Tannoy hallmark. Quality is assured by our investment in up-to-date testing,
design and production facilities. Over 50 years' experience backs our
engineering design but the goal of musical excellence has never changed.
 
 
The  Point Source Dual Concentric
Drive Unit
 
  Originating in the l95Os, the Tannoy Dual Concentric principle is highly
regarded by audiophiles and professional music lovers. Though the
fundamental idea has not changed, technology and the refinement of its
application have - Dual Concentric technology is in constant development.
  The Tannoy Dual Concentric follows the ideal of a fullrange point source
drive unit. It delivers three major advantages: it is a coincident acoustic point
source with a truly wide dynanric range and constant symmetrical
directivity. That means superb musical dynamics with low distortion and
crisp, accurate stereo imaging.
  The 10" Dual Concentric in the D700 is built into a high rigidity cast
chassis. A stiff, lightweight Duralumin tweeter diaphragm and a precision
injection moulded mid/bass cone are driven by high performance voice coils.
The cone profile and precision computer designed Tulip Waveguide integrate
the output of these diaphragms to produce an ideal spherical wavefront for
pin-point stereo imaging. Magnetic gap cooling and high temperature
materials in the drive unit motors guarantee low distortion, wide dynamic
range performance.

By Defynition
  Definition is a re-assertion of all that makes Tannoy loudspeakers great.
In the English language 'Definition' means either 'to outline the boundaries
of ' or 'to give meaning to'. Tannoy engineers these exact qualities into the
Definition D700 loudspeaker. This product redeftnes the currently accepted
limits of frequency and dynamic range, of stereo precision and detail
resolution. It brings true meaning to the musical experience by adding
nothing of its own character.
  Definition D700 is the loudspeaker to empower music. The D700 is a
floor standing system designed for freespace use and is based on a phase
coherent point source Dual Concentric drive unit. This is augmented in the
lower registers by a high performance 10" bass driver, itself reflex loaded by
rear-facing twin lamina flow ports.
  The D700 can offer very high power handling without acoustic
compression effects. This gives the loudspeaker a natural ease generating
the scale, excitement and impact of live music and the full drama of movie
soundtracks, when used in a home theatre. Multi-faceted cabinet design
reduces panel sizes over conventional loudspeaker box cabinets, breaking up
the regular internal volume that would otherwise encourage colouration
from internal standing waves and panel resonance.
  The Definition cabinet employs rigid internal bracing and Differential
Material Technology (DMT) in the cabinet build and in coupling the driver
motors to the internal bracing, and the internal bracing to the cabinet
walls.
  This is done to control the energy flow from the drive units into and
through the cabinet structure, minimising the effects of vibration induced
colourations. Smooth cabinet edges minimise diffraction effects, floor
  spikes or self-adjusting ball and cup supports dramatically improve
stability, stereo imaging and dynamic impact.
  A selection of real wood cabinet finishes is available. Definition DAGO
can be normally wired or Bi-Wired for improved fidelity through Tannoy's
gold-plated captive link terminals. Advanced drive unit design permits the
use of a simple crossover network, Hard-wired with top quality crossover
components to ensure that the musical message reaches the drive units
unhindered. Low-loss air-cored inductors and selected very high quality
polypropylene capacitors are used.
  In creating the Definition D700 Tannoy has taken the fundamental ideals
of the audiophile approach and married them to a reliability and robustoess
built on long experience in the professional recording studio market. The
